999 vs. 1098 Aesthetically

I’m having these debates with people about the 999 and the 1098. I’m really split 50/50 between the two bikes. It is no question that the 1098 out performs the 999, but the 999 is no sloucher either but this is about the looks between the two. I’m thinking about the 999 since I could work on it and tweak but then there is also the 1098 which looks gorgeous. And now some people are talking about the 999 as an ugly duckling which it isn’t, its still something to look at and different, its something to work on. So what do you guys think.

    HEY
I GUESS THAT BOTH BIKES HAS THERE OWN CARACTER.
    ONE LOOK TOO NICE
    OTHER LOOK AGRESIVE

Once something is beautiful , it will always remain the same no mater what the next beauty is.Ducati bikes are one of these things.Never loses it’s apeal.Sophia loren will always be admired no matter how many gorgeous actresses come along !if one can afford it either 999 , 1098 or both will satisfy my taste

  3. Big B

999 is more apealing, i just love the way it looks :)

  4. Missy-TheOriginal

999 serene, harmless, lights rounded, front head looks like a bunny with a good character, the white red body in the middle though shakla mo mratab or cut like the 1098, which looks more modern, aggressive and the head looks like an alien with ears! It does look more modern and better than 999.

a7is min kalamik china 3ajbik il triple 9 akthar, no?

Personally I don’t like anything perfect. I like things with a twist, ugly spot or something which adds character and depth to it with time you love them more and appreciate them. I also like the fact that you wanna work on the piece. Don’t buy until you’re pretty confident and you’re in this E!!! E!!!! THAT’S THE ONE I WANT 100% state…hehe

to me, the ducati 1098 looks much better…..the 999 looks deformed…:)

  6. Sin

the looks of both play in different fields of character…the 999 is nothing less…but would prefer the 1098…plus it looks a bit like the your previous yamaha R1 which is one magnificent machine.

  7. Sin

sorry for the “..the your…” its supposed to be “your”…typo , my bad

  8. zoomzoom

i will take 999 even if they offer the 1098 for free :)

1098 is too aggressive to me, and it’s look not unique as the 999

  9. 1098. Pictures dont do it justice. I hated the 1098 until I saw it in person. Its tiny, extremely slick and makes the 999 look clunky.

  10. Jafar

    Sin,
It is a misconception that the 1098 looks like the Yamaha R1.the 1098 looks more like the original 916/966/998 from which the Yamaha R1 derived it’s frontal look.

    Sin,
It is a misconception that the 1098 looks like the Yamaha R1.the 1098 looks more like the original Ducati 916/966/998 designe(which came out in 1994 ) from which the Yamaha R1 derived it’s frontal look.

  12. Sin

Jafar, i did go through the 966/916/998 and ur right. Thanks for the correction.

  13. Watya

1098 without a doubt…. its meant to be fed tarmac!!!!

  14. I would take a 999 with a termignoni exhaust integrated into the back.

  15. Mo Hat

1098 with termingnoni exhaust, enough said. and stupid mark and his termignoni exhaust videos :P (just kidding, i loved em)

  16. DeReD

    1098 hands down..

  17. trixter: yup, thats my problem! I need to decide!

Jafar: Both satisfy my taste, but its a matter of timing. And effort to put in.

Big B: I agree with you and I think the 1098 is good too! So 999!

Missy: lool! Bunny! hehehe! I like both a lot, I really am stuck in the middle. so you are going for the 1098 then. But you understand that I want to put some effort into the bike.

Eddy: Ok, got it! 1098 all the way!

Sin: ok so you say 1098

zoomzoom: Damn, now thats an opinion! 999

Mark: 1098, I know your position! hehehe

    Watya: 1098

    K: 999

    Mo Hat: loooool! ok 1098

    Dered: 1098

    Voting at this stage:

    999: 4

    1098: 6

  18. I read the article in the magazine you gave me about the 999. It does push me more towards the 999, I always thought the front end was gorgeous and “different” and I am now thinking maybe the 1098 is more mainstream then the 999. Its a really really difficult choice, its hard to be standing next to the 1098 and not want it.

Best thing to do is take them both out for a test drive and see which feels better. A black 999 with a red frame would look pretty sweet…

  19. Mark: Told you, you either go one way or the other, it just proves that the 999 isn’t a bad bike. It just needs someone to tweak it and work with it.

I had a chance to ride the hypermotard and the 999s today. I am at a point where looks don’t really mater that much on a bike. Once you’re on it, ypu forget all about it. The 1098 is nice looking, but when looking at them side by side, you can tell that a whole lot more $$$ went into manufacturing the 999. The triple is massive compared to the 1098’s. Ducati couldn’t make a “Better, faster, sexier” bike wiothout cutting some corners. (specially in this economy’s weak dollar). I prefer mechanical things, and even though I like the one sided swing arm on the 1098, the dry clutch and ride of the 999 entice me more than the 1098. plus, I’m someone who just loves to go against what the current trends are. I’ll take the 999S any day.

I own an ’05 999r and I just love it. I’ve been riding her for more than 2 yrs. now and the riding and looks just gets better. I’ve test rode other bikes from factories and friends, like the ’05 GSXr, 1098s, MV f41000. Needless to say, all the bikes have their own characteristics and feel.

However, I always come back to the 999.

Firstly, let’s talk about the looks. I agree with what one gentleman said about the 999. It’s ahead of its time. The 1098 should have been the bike that came after the 998. It would have been more receptive to the general audience. After, the 999 could have been the new revolutionary bike with more rounder and smoother fairings; and, the headlights being vertical, like the MV and the Gixer. The horizontal headlights are getting old and the different factory bikes are beginning to look similar. My wife mistook a Yamaha R1 for a 1098. Good for Yamaha, bad for Ducati. From a distance, you really have to look at the bike to differentiate btn. a 1098 and an R1, whereas you could automatically spot a 999 by just a slight glance. The look of the 999 is just so smooth and organic, especially with the round oval bulbs on the lower sides of the bike. The profile of the bike just looks like an F-14 jet fighter, straight from a robotech comic. The fact you could see the engine is cool too, b/c it’s like a naked sport bike. Again, ahead of its time. If you see the profile of the 999, you will notice that the bike is completely horizontal from front to back, whereas, in the 1098, the bike is slightly higher in the back, just like all the other Jap. bikes.
I believe the 999 will just keep looking better as times goes. The 1098 already looks outdated.

Secondly, the ride. The faster you go with the 999, or in my case, the 999r, the smoother the feel. You can’t believe you’re doing 130+ on the bike, until you look down b/c the feel is so smooth. It’s just like butter. The frame is so narrow, that it’s like you’re on a bicycle frame. You’ll never experience that on the other bikes. The 1098s felt rough and you could feel the speed a lot more than on the 999r. You could also ride the 999r longer since there’s less weight on your wrist. The bike was designed for the rider.

That’s my 2 cents worth. Again, the 999r is an entirely different animal. To be fair, I should compare it with the 1098r. May be in the near future. Still, I admire the looks of the 999r than any 1098. May be one day you’ll see what I’m talking about.
