PS3 ≠ Blu-Ray Player

These are a few reasons why you shouldn’t use your PS3 as a Blu-Ray player.

  • Doesn’t work with Universal Remotes
  • Louder than Standalone Blu-Ray Players
  • Interface is not user friendly
  • Doesn’t work with multichannel analog outputs of any old AV receiver
  • Consumes a lot of power
  • Doesn’t integrate with new AV recievers to say that it is producing DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD sound.

I have tried the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and I have found it to be a bit stiff, and its annoying using the controller to control the whole thing, it doesn’t have IR so you can’t control it with another controller. The interface has a lot of features but it does take you some time to figure out the menu system.

  1. On the other hand, it’s the only player that can update its software to play “updated” discs. (Curse that DRM).

  2. Aliman

  3. the latest patch 2.2 or something allows 6.1 dts etc plus comptaibility – as for the remotes sony produces some great ones for the bluray ps3

    great remotes here: http://www.google.com/products?q=ps3+remote&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1

“For high-definition movie enthusiasts, the 2.30 firmware also brings with it the much anticipated DTS-HD Master Audio support for the console’s Blu-ray Disc playback feature. Like PCM and Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA can deliver audio presentation that is bit-for-bit identical to the original studio master.

“PS3 was designed to enable delivery of new and improved technologies like DTS-HD Master Audio,” said Teiji Yutaka, SVP of Software Platform Development at SCE. “So we are delighted to be able to offer this capability to PS3 users.”

ps3 is the best bluray machine on the amrket because of the firmware wireless patches and the ps 3 new store looks great and you can customize your desktop and icons with xmb system

  4. actually u can use a universal remote i have the harmony one and when i tried to configure it with the ps3 a msg appeared stating that i only needed an additional add on so that the ps3 would work with IR signals they offered a couple of stuff mostly were IR remotes but u would only use the IR-usb thing

Z the ps3 was a bad bd player but now its one of the best as u always get upgrades and new goodies for the system
now u have all the new hd surround sound and its fantastic and bluray live as well
i got it working great + i got an ir usb adaptor (bluwave) from amazon and it works with my harmoney one but the bad thing is the lack of power switch control

  6. – there is a Bluetooth remote control .

    About the TrueHD :

” THe PS3 internally decodes TrueHD to PCM. Bit for bit it is the same, identical. It will sound the same.
Starting on April 15th, the latest upgrade to the PS3 will allow it to do the same with DTS-HD MA. It will internally decode DTS-HD MA and stream it to the receiver via PCM, again bit for bit the same.
So the sound is all there, just the codec is different.
    Be sure to upgrade your PS3 ( V 2.30 ) “

DVLz: I think they meant built in

Aliman: Just talking about Universal Remote

amer: it does produce the sound but doesn’t work with AVs, thats all they were saying!

n: It will work, but they meant as something that is built-in

lfc-q8: Hopefully it keeps improving, I’m waiting for what XBox is going to come up with..

Laziale: Not built in, it will decode but not work with AVs, that is why they find it annoying

  8. lfc-q8

Z it wil work with ur avrs and thats for sure but it wont show on the svr screen as true HD but it will sound like it :) get it

  9. lfc-q8: I think I’m going to wait on it to go down in price a bit more!
