I haven’t had much luck with external drives recently, most of them would fail after some time or they can’t take large files which was very annoying.

I got this external drive on sale at Tumi in the states, about 30% off. It is a relatively small, and designed with compact travel in mind. Overall I am enjoying the use of this little drive

I bought a Maxtor OneTouch Mini Edition drive few years back (60GB), though i use it heavily and for long periods, i never have any problems with it at all
to tell you the truth, one of the reasons i’ve chosen that drive was it’s elegant look and small size, but the main reason was it’s reliability, i already have another Maxtor (Big) external drive which is attached “permanently” to my desktop as a backup/restore device.
I guess, buying a well known brand has some advantages over “not so known” ones.

External HDD cases with plastic covers are more prone to failures due to heat. Get aluminum covers.
You would’ve had better chances with a toshiba/hitachi HDD with a cheap aluminum cover (3-5KD).
Mine’s about 4 years old now (80GB) and thank God haven’t had a single problem.
