Review: Legend – David Gemmell

LegendDavidGemmell

David Gammell is one the best fantasy writers of our time, he passed a few years back now but his books still live on. The story is of Druss the Legend taking up his battle Axe “Snaga” to help the Drenai once more fight off the Nadir invaders at Dros Delnoch, and new Heroes must rise to fight with Druss. Now this is one of those rare timeless books, it isn’t a Pulitzer prize winning book or something of that nature but one very memorable one. It puts you in the middle of a heroic adventure, full of blood and sweat, dreams and fears, magic and might. At Dros Delnoch they are meant to hold against a horde of warriors who want their blood with 50 to 1 odds against them, a sea of soldiers where you see no end to them. Druss unites these warriors who are but farmers with some Heroic women to fight for whats right, can these soldiers hold on, how will Druss the Legend give them enough hope to survive. The characters are colorful and pull you in, there actions are their words, they fight for what they believe in because that is what Druss gave them. Druss became the Legend not just through his endless battles, but for never losing a battle, for never giving up against the worst odds, and never sacrificing his principles. I bought the 25th Anniversay edition because I knew which book this was, the first one from Gemmell and I have read a few that I love, and I knew that I had to read this, printed in 1984 and reprinted many times and the one I picked up was a 2009 reprint and still an amazing story.

Retro Posters of my Favorite Shows

Now this is art at a fun level, an artist called Exergian has taken all the popular tv shows in turned them into Pop-Culture Art relating to each show. Taking each show and coming up with a retro poster to represent it is a very fun idea, some are really matching and some are a bit off. The link below you can see all the posters which are for sale, but added all the ones that I found to be interesting, some of my favorites are 24, BattleStar Gallactica, Dexter, FlashForward, Knight Rider, Heroes, and MacGuyer.

Review: Astro Boy

Now this is something I have been waiting for a while, a remake of the old Japanese Animated tv show which we all knew and enjoyed. I expected a lot for this movie, its probably a build up from childhood memories but the story isn’t exactly what I expected or the voices, honestly Nicolas Cage was a bit annoying as Dr. Tenma but Astro Boy was a good character. Astro Boy is built from the memories of Dr. Tenma’s son and he set off to find himself after he discovers that he is a robot. Now the story has some twists and turns, but always entertaining, humoring with the laws of robotics and the attitude that humans take to robots even though their artificial intelligence allows them to understand humans clearly. An entertaining movie, I honestly expected something a little edgier but it was a lot of fun to watch.

Review: Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

The Vampire’s Assistant tells the frightening tale of a boy who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares. 14-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

A movie I have been waiting a while to see, putting Vampire’s in a different kind of roles and I wasn’t even sure what the freaks were going to do. There has been a lot of vampire movies and tv lately but very few have been taking the comical aspect of it, and I think the story had the right amount of comedy and action. You get introduced to the freaks, creatures who are bound together by their odd features, then there are the vampires, and yes Salma Hayek is a freak with a beard and she still looks good with it. Wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, be prepared its a bit of a long story but there is a lot to tell, and the best part is that you are satisfied at the end but you know there is going to be a sequel.

Review: Blood and Bone

Story centers on an ex-con (Michael Jai White) who takes the underground fighting world by storm in his quest to fulfill a promise to a dead friend. A promise that will take from fight to fight to reach the goal of saving his friend’s family from the king pin of the streets. I knew this was an all fighting movie but I wasn’t expecting much from the script but turned out to be better then I expected. Some scenes were overplayed but overall a nice martial arts movie with some story to it, and when you get caught up with the fight hoping to see the other guy get beat up you know that your enjoying it. The choreographed action was pretty good sinceits realistic, a few parts could have been done a bit better but you can tell that Michael Jai White is a real martial artist after all, White is a bad ass who actually knows, and practices multiple martial arts — Shotokan, Tae Kwon Do, Kobuo, Goju Ryu, Tang Soo Do, Wushu and Kyokushin. I wouldn’t want to piss of this guy.

White Collar

Neal Caffrey is a con-man who was captured after a three-year game of cat-and-mouse. With three months left while serving a four-year sentence, he escapes from a maximum security federal prison to find Kate, his ex-girlfriend. Peter Burke, the FBI agent who captured Caffrey, catches him again. This time, Caffrey gives Burke information about evidence in another case; however, this information comes with a price: Burke must have a meeting with Caffrey. At this meeting, Caffrey proposes a deal: he will help Burke catch other criminals as part of a work-release program. Burke agrees, after some hesitation. Within a day of being released from prison, Caffrey already lives in one of the most expensive houses in Manhattan, after persuading an elderly widow to rent him her guest room. After catching the elusive Dutchman, Caffrey has proven to Burke that he will help him, and that he will not try to escape again. However, at the same time, Caffrey is still looking for Kate, who he believes is in trouble.

A crime drama from USA Networks with nice combination of action, tension, and comedy that I wasn’t expecting. Caffery is the magical con artist who helps the FBI with their cases in odd ways, he sees what these law men can’t see and does want they can’t do. At the same time he has the straight cut Burke on his case all the time but the combination of the two characters is good. At first I wasn’t sure about the show, it had a bit of an odd but entertaining start but the story just kept getting better and better, with a larger picture inside each episode being pieced together while they handle their current case which usually ends at the end of an episode. The show really gets going after a few episodes and should be added to your watch list, I hope they continue at this pace.

Mariah Carey ft. Nicki Minaj – Up Out My Face

There is no doubt that I’m a fan of Mariah Carey and her songs are fun and I enjoy. I also think she is pretty hot, she has had her phases but her voice is amazing especially when she has the hip hop thrown into the combination with her vocals. This isn’t one of her biggest songs but still fun. I still can’t believe that she is married to Nick Cannon, still doesn’t make sense.

Iron Man: Armored Adventures

With the success of Iron Man, Marvel Studios has followed up with an Iron Man animated show called Iron Man: Armored Adventures. In this case they take the younger version of Tony Stark the genius and go through how he developed all the different version of the suit and it’s purposes, as this monstrosity called the Dynamobuster which is meant to destroy all that is in it’s path. Then the other versions for deep space travel, atmospheric flight and battle, the other version is a stealth suit meant to penetrate all kinds of surveillance and security. This is looking to be a very fun show, the animation and CGI quality is very good so they haven’t ruined it as I would have expected, its a bit of kid’s story line but still very entertaining and I have just seen a few episodes.

When his industrialist father Howard Stark disappears in a plane crash after refusing to weaponize the Earth Mover at Obadiah Stane’s behest, 16 year old genius Tony uses a high-tech suit of armor he has constructed and investigates a charge that Stane may have been involved in his father’s death. As Iron Man, Tony spends his time stopping Stane’s plans and saving the world from other villains such as Mandarin, Mr. Fix, Whiplash, A.I.M., Madame Masque, Living Laser, the Maggia, Firebrand, Controller, Crimson Dynamo, Blizzard, Killer Shrike, Unicorn, M.O.D.O.K., Ghost, Fin Fang Foom, Black Knight, and Technovore. He is assisted in his crime fighting efforts with help from James Rhodes and Pepper Potts. Tony’s activities as Iron Man usually result in his needing to make up excuses as to why he is constantly late or missing from school and other activities. Now dependent on his phenomenal technology for survival, Tony must balance the pressures of teenage life with the duties of being a super hero.

Review: Spread

Spread

Ashton Kutcher trying to play a troubled young man bumming around in LA unable to commit to a woman, until he finds a woman like him. I’m a fan of Ashton Kutcher, pretty much since he made “Dude Where’s My Car?” but that is the type of movie I expect him to be in, and he shouldn’t have been in this movie. His role as a troubled young man trying to mooch off women, and continue living his life as it is just seems a bit off, the character seems bland. Its one of those movies you watch and wish you didn’t since you can’t get time back, the sex scenes were a bit on the vulgar side, just annoying, not flowing, the whole movie is a waste of time.

The Address – Burj Dubai

We got a normal room with twin beds for our one night in Dubai, I knew the hotel was nice but I didn’t think it would be this nice. First off there are two Addresses, one is inside Dubai Mall and one is next to Burj Dubai, we stayed at the one next to Burj Dubai because the one inside Dubai Mall is horrible in comparison, same furniture but horrible service. But this hotel was something unexpected, the rooms are big, big bathrooms with an amazing view.

The staff were very nice and efficient, what surprised me was the room service. We ordered a variety of food for breakfast at 10:00 am before heading out and it was up in 20 minutes, everything tasted very good. There is free Wifi available but its extremely slow, I would expect something better from a hotel of this caliber. The lobby area is very nice, but going up to the rooms is a bit confusing and you need a card to get up to the room, and a card to keep the lights up in the room, I tend to get extra cards to put in that slot to keep the lights on. Overall the hotel is very nice, extremely convenient being right next to Dubai Mall, and its only 20 minutes from the airport, we left before our flight in an hour and twenty minutes, when we go there we had 50 minutes before take off and we made it easily to the plane.
