Amazon Kindle Fire HD or X

KindleFireHD1

I was in love with all things Android, the freedom and flexibility with all the functionality. The Amazon product line was always trying to get you to work within the framework of the Amazon, the content all collected nicely and delivering TV Shows & Movies through Amazon Prime, but you have to be within the US for that to work.

KindleFireHD2

What got annoying about the Amazon Kindle over time was that it was so stiff, the iPad is restricted within the iPad Framework but there is so much that you can do with an iPad it never really bother’s you, there is so much to choose from.

KindleFireHD3

But only certain Apps from Android is allowed to install on your Kindle Fire/HD/HDX when the Android platform has a lot more Apps. It is honestly frustrating that I can’t get to all the Apps, and not all the ones I use are formatted for the Kindle. The Kindle has a great feature of integrating your Amazon details into your payments and subscriptions making it easy to use but I was still frustrating with the stiffness of it. The Kindle PaperWhite seems more useful since it is dedicated for those who want to read, to get that feeling that it isn’t a screen yet it is bright.

KindleFireHD4

At first the Kindle Hardware was disappointing, but when the HD came out it was great and the HDX is eve better, even the PaperWhite is great for it’s purpose. But at the end it became a paper weight in my office with no other real use since I have an iPad which I use for all sorts of things and my Samsung Nexus 10 does have the flexibility of an Android device that I love.

Gadget Overdose

This month has turned into the month of Gadgets.

I seriously think I overdosed on a lot of these things and I don’t think I will have enough time to totally play with them.

On the way:

  • Google Nexus 10
  • Apple iPod Touch
  • Google Nexus 4 (Got It From Ebay)
  • Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9″

Those are too many gadgets at one time, I feel like a gadget whore, and I wasn’t expecting all of them to come at the same time. This is going to be an overload of geekiness at this rate. My last iPod touch was from 2009 and I said I wouldn’t get one unless they made it with more space or overhauled it, well they overhauled it and I liked it, so I placed an order after Apple kept cancelling because of my account. The Amazon Kindle Fire HD I ordered a while back so I wasn’t expecting it to coincide with the Google products that were coming out, and now they are all out for delivery.

Too many boxes to rip open! The only delay I’m facing is my Nexus 4, delayed three weeks, damn you Google!

Kindle Fire HD – New & Interesting

With the arrival of the Google Nexus 7 Amazon knew they had to step it up, the Google Nexus 7 sold so well even with a few glitches that it did have, for a while there was a ridiculous wait but even using it now I am very happy with it and it is an excellent device. So Amazon stepped it up with the new Kindle fire and higher specs, lets hope that it doesn’t choke like the Kindle Fire did after a while. The best thing about the Kindle is the Amazon platform access to a lot of content, and hopefully this time the hardware will be able to handle it.

But as usual I couldn’t resist to get my hands on the new Kindle Fire HD, so I went with the 8.9″ since I already have the Google Nexus 7″ and I’m happy with it. Also the specifications on the Wifi 8.9″ is really good, also the 4G LTE Kindle Fire HD is useless outside of the US.

Simple Specifications:

  • 1280×800 display
  • Dolby audio with stereo speakers
  • Dual-antenna Wi-Fi
  • Dual-core processor
  • Min 16GB of storage
  • An upgraded software experience

The price range is between $200 for the 16GB 7″ Wifi Kindle Fire HD and $369 for the 32 GB 8.9″ Wifi Kindle Fire HD.

Tech Round Up – Nexus 7, Dropbox, Zenbook

Google Nexus 7

I got a notification that my Google Nexus 7 has been shipped as off the 13th of July which was pretty exciting since it was around 3:53 am and I don’t know why I was up at that time. I heard some people got notifications and some didn’t get it yet, but I got mine I stopped worrying, I thought they might pull an Apple and just cancel you for random reasons as usual. Now I can’t wait to get my hands on it, I got the 16GB version and with the hardware its packing, its going to be good.

Dropbox Expansion

I think I use Dropbox for almost everything, I store everything electronically that I can that is usefull like airline mileage cards, a copy of IDs, bookings in PDF, not including music, videos, and tv shows, and any other form of media that can be stored. A long time ago I go the Dropbox Pro plan which gave me 50 GB and then with the HTC One X they give you the an extra 24 GB, so I had a total of 74 GB. Then recently I got an update from Dropbox a few days ago that I got an upgrade to the account and its not 126 GB which is a pretty nice thing to see since its been a while since they updated their packages.

Then I setup a friend’s Samsung Galaxy SIII and I knew they had a package for Dropbox too and since he wasn’t using it I signed up through it and got a nice 48 GB bump to 174.75 GB. I do love Dropbox and now more space to abuse.

Asus Zenbook

I made the jump, it was out of stock for a while on Amazon and the other day it said In Stock so I hit the Add To Cart & then the Checkout button right away. It seems that the Zenbook has been an Amazon Exclusive because I couldn’t find it anywhere, and I specifically wanted these specifications. The only thing I’m going to do is do a clean install of Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate which I have without all the random junk installed for it to be even faster.

Specifications

  • Intel Core i7-3517UM 1.7 GHz
  • 4 GB SO-DIMM, 128 GB Solid-State Drive
  • Backlit Keyboard
  • 13.3-Inch IPS Full-HD LED Screen, Intel HD 4000 Graphics
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I will probably get my hands on it next week when both the Zenbook and Nexus 7 hit my mailbox.

Amazon – Facelift

It seems that Amazon got a face light to their whole front end, and I like the update. It feels like and easy, makes me want to hit the buy it now button more then before. Now its clear the number of items in my checkout cart, this isn’t helping my credit card. Keeping my credit card at a zero balance is an uphill battle every month, and Amazon is no help.

A Package

Delivery0911

Its like a bonus of items, I love getting packages like these, full of things that I have been looking forward and piling them up together in my mailbox to be shipped together. I preordered the BluRay edition of Star Wars from May or June and now that I have it I have no clue when I’m going to watch all 6 movies, but I want to do it one shot and require people to watch it with.

Books:

  • Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World’s Most Wanted Hacker
  • Man Machine – Max Barry

Picked up a couple of books that I am looking forward to reading and a couple of design books that I would enjoy going through. Then I picked up the Star Wars special edition Moleskines both the small and large notebooks and I love having them but don’t want to use it. I have other Moleskines that I can use, the normal ones, I like collecting these special edition Moleskines.

MyUS Quick Shipping

The one thing that we all live by is online purchases in my case I buy movies, electronics, hardware , books, and pretty much anything else that comes to mind. The only issue I have is when it gets stuck in customs, there were times that it would get stuck for weeks with Aramex and a few times they would lose my product which drove me nuts.

In this case I switched to MyUS and I was very happy with them, quick to reply always taking care of my shipments. I could combine items and ship certain items, and you get choices to ship through FedEx, DHL, or a combination.

After shipping so many different kinds of items through multiple ways I figured out that the best way is to ship through DHL in somewhat of medium to small size package. Sometimes I combined a lot of packages into one big package and that would get stuck for at least 10 days, and with Aramex the smallest packages take at least four days. Now with DHL & FedEx if I ship it in a more compact size even if its combined it flies under their radar and I get it out of customs the second day.

Ramadan Delivery

I had somethings on hold for a while in my mailbox and my Amazon cart was full for a good two months, I was trying to hold off on making any purchases. Two weeks ago I decided to go ahead with the purchase, got to my mailbox and shipped it with all the items there. It was shipped two weeks back at this point, four days to deliver and the rest it got stuck in customs for while only to be delivered on the first day of Ramadan, a nice start to the day, I didn’t have a chance to open all the stuff up until later in the day but it felt like Christmas.

The items delivered:

  • Two Green Lantern Models
  • Game of Thrones – Goerge RR Martin Book Set
  • Two Batman Begins Pieces
  • Lord of the Rings Model
  • Three Large Volume Transformers Comic Books
  • Red Robin (Cool New Comic)
  • 007 Carte Blanche (A preorder that I forgot about and its my third copy! lol! I love James Bond novels)
  • Two Lens Caps to replace the missing ones
  • LifeHacker Book Volume 3 updated

American Express Points Links Up With Amazon

AmericanExpressPoints

Now this is a match made in heaven, I have been using my American Express card for all Amazon Purchases and other purchases as well. Now American Express & Amazon have teamed up so that you can use your American Express Points towards Amazon Purcahses and the best part is that it automatically gives you the option to purchase with your points.

Amazon

All you have to do is associate your American Express Card with your account and in my case I have two cards even though they combine for one set of points. Surprisingly this has been around for a few months but only recently have I had a chance to look at the details and associate my account. After going through the process I had about $1700 worth of points that I can redeem so I just piled up on the Amazon Cart and purchased a lot of things that I want and don’t need, and ended up only paying $400. Its just all the things that have piled up from adding items from my Amazon App on the iPad and a few things that I have saved for later.

BAFI Payment

AmazonGC

Usually when you go on trips with friends there was always someone covering someone, and at the end of the trip we figure out the balance. My friend, lets call him BAFI, was my room mate on a previous trip. So after all the details were discussed it amount to around 135 KD for the whole trip that he owed me, so I said he can pay me when we get back to Kuwait. He then proceeded to suggest that can pay me with a Amazon gift card instead if I was ok with that, I thought that was GENIUS! I’m always buying from Amazon, and I had another purchase in mind and that would drastically lessen the damage. I know that it is only in my head that I’m not spending more money on Amazon, but the travel expenses were already spent so to me this was a plus and made me get my purchase earlier then expected. Thank you Bafi!

(The Gift Card has already been used! lol)
