GulfRun 8 – Racing Around Bahrain

GR801

This is probably one of the funnest racing events I have been to yet, a very large selection of very scary machines on the track with a lot of surprises. Prepping these machines for the track takes time but it will pay off when you abuse the hell out of it on the track, and some of them perform smoothly, and some just can’t take the abuse. There were a few machines didn’t finish all the events, but I loved how pumped up everyone was.

GR802

I enjoyed the Outer Circuit & GP Circuit a lot, I was going around and the outer circuit and I can tell when my brakes give out. A few hot laps, then one cool down, and then I left the car cool down for about 20 minutes before hitting the track again. The Audi R8s were out to kill, these guys abused the hell out of their machines and GT3RS’s were extremely competitive this time around. Then there were the GTRs, these beasts are scary on the track, they hold well on the corners and take off on the straight line, the Japanese knew how to build them. The surprise is always with the Mitsubishi Evolution, you have no clue what they are going to do and this time around they more then performed, it was impressive. Black & Yellow Evo’s stood out the most.

GR803

At the end of the day we are all exhausted and go to the Sofitel where about 90% of the drivers are staying so we practically took over the hotel. You find drivers in the lobby & restaurants, its a lot of fun getting together with everyone like that, and then there were a few guys who brought their motorcycles. Personally I wish I had my bike with my but I don’t have the time at all to ride around town, too many things to do and to take care off, and after the meal all I want to do is pass the hell out.

GR804

Next day on the GP Circuit was a lot of fun, I loved those corners and I have to admit it does drive me nuts when another car passes me. Still I catch up with them on the straight, but this year it was different. This year it was another level of machines, a 500 bhp car is not as impressive as it used to be there are scarier machines with tuned suspension to attack the track, its not all about the engine. I for one enjoyed abusing the scooter around the track.

Catching Up

GRBahrain

This whole past week I have been at GulfRun enjoying every moment on the track and in Bahrain. And before that I was traveling and a lot of other things that piled up. I came back a few days ago but its like I’m playing catch up with everything thats going on. First I’m catching up with my offline life then I will catch up with my online life.

It was such an active week last week that I was barely online and I didn’t have much time to check out my work emails. Even three days off work and I got 221 Emails piled up which I had to reply to not including the normal emails. When we drove back from Bahrain it was a lot of cars who attended GulfRun which was a lot of fun seeing people you know on a four hour road trip, but we were subjected to an extensive search of our car and items as they suspected us of carrying alcohol into Saudi, just took some time and the guy was a bit cold but it didn’t take long before we were at McDs grabbing some sandwiches for our drive. The best part is to be eating those fries on that long drive, it does hit the spot in the afternoon. Now go to settle down and catch up with everything, I want a vacation that I don’t have anything to do but the things I want to do while staying in Kuwait. I would get a lot done!

GulfRun 7 – Engines Revving To Go

GR7

Things have come full swing and GulfRun is around the corner, today is the car wash event that I do enjoy so much. A ton of different kinds of machines coming around this time of year and some of them are really modified and ready for the track, everyone is taking this seriously and each year the caliber of cars and drivers just keeps going up. The car show is always entertaining at 360 Mall especially so many machines are on display especially the ones that are supposed to be indoors.

Kuwait:
Thursday, Jan 12th: Al-Falah Carwash

  • 6:00pm – 10:00pm |Stickers placement

Friday, Jan 13th: 360 Mall

  • 10:00am – 10:00pm | Car Show

Saturday, Jan 14th: 360 Mall

  • 10:00am – 10:00pm | Car Show

There have been a few changes to the track, and I’m really looking forward to checking out Outer Circuit, I have never done that before. As for the Karting, Bahrain International Circuit have the best Go Karting circuit in the world which is going to be very cool to try it out.

Bahrain:
Thursday, Jan 26th: Bahrain International Circuit

  • 8.30am – 7:00pm | GulfRun7 Day 1 (Outer Circuit / Inner Circuit / Karting)

Friday, Jan 27th: Bahrain International Circuit

Slide & Glide – Bahrain Drifting Competition

Slide ‘N Glide‘s first drift event will be held at BIC (Bahrain International Circuit) located in Sakhir on Saturday, October 22nd 2011 starting at 9 AM until 5 PM. the event will be divided into 3 sessions:

  • Practice session 1 (Slide ‘N Glide staff will ride with you)
  • Practice session 2 (On your own unless you want someone with you)
  • Competition (No pressure, it’s just for fun!)

I have always been a fan of Drifting, I have watched a lot of Formula D over the years and seen what some of these guys do during GulfRun and its impressive. I for one lack skills to keep the car going sideways but with more Drifting events such as these I can probably get better at it. The best part is people can participate and they can learn from the professional guys from SlideNGlide. The event is taking place in Bahrain International Circuit on the 22nd of October anyone can join, and it would be a lot of fun to watch, and a portion of the proceeds goes to Steps Rehabilitation Center, you can find more details on their website.

F1 Bahrain Permenantly Cancelled for the 2011 Season

GRBahrain

After approving F1 to return to Bahrain for the 2011 we all got excited and were happy that it is coming back. Honestly a lot of people were happy for Bahrain, we want things to settle down and every one to get back to their daily lives. I know that I for one am very much looking forward to visiting Bahrain again for our friends and the track. Bahrain is one of the most accomodating people and country in the Middle East, very nice and very nice people.

BahrainF1

Then later in the week, FIA supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, and president Jean Todt decided to go change their mind. They both suddenly announced that Bahrain is out of bounds again. All the teams participating in F1 filed a formal later against reinstating Bahrain to the FIA and mentioned that all that teams won’t be participating in that race since they have gotten warning from their respective governments that their safety can not be guaranteed in Bahrain such as the warning from the US Embassy and UK Embassy, which is very sad since things have very much settled down in Bahrain and its considerably safe, people go about their daily lives normally. I do hope that this exemption is only for this year and hopefully returns for 2012.

Landed in Bahrain

Just landed in Bahrain and getting ready for GulfRun, I picked up my car and already roaming about Bahrain. I keep having to refamiliarize myself with the roads so I do get a little lost but you can always find your way around. The one thing I want to know is if they have a high quality car wash which does a good detailing job, where can I find it in Bahrain?

Now to get things ready, its going to be a fun weekend with GulfRun 6.

Project Completition in the GCC

Construction

Looking at all the different projects that been completed in the last 5 years you can see construction projects, financial projects, media development, business development projects, telecommunication development. So many different kinds that I don’t know how to list them all. Saudi talks about projects in the billions of dollars while Bahrain completes these important project within a certain budget and does a fantastic job when seeing the end result. Qatar is on an insane boom of every kind, and UAE is still continuing with the projects the planned out and scrapped the ones that didn’t work. In all these countries you can see all the different kinds of projects and the result of their completion, but in the case of Kuwait. In the last 5 years Kuwait has re-tendered and canceled so many projects that I honestly lost count. I can’t remember any major project that has been completed in the last 6 months. Kuwait is stagnant, in place and no change even though we all want to progress forward. They have been talking about Fiber to Home for the past 8 years with no result in Kuwait while Oman is connecting fiber between very distant cities as well as other maritime projects. Below is my ranking of countries based on project completion, the funny is that Kuwait has the highest number of running projects but a very low successful ratio. All the Gulf countries have passed Kuwait in regards to progress and development, and our government has yet to do complete any major project. For how long was the first ring road stuck with no construction of projects then suddenly everything came alive in 6 months ago.

Projects Completed By Ranking:

  • Qatar
  • UAE
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Oman
  • Bahrain
  • Kuwait

NegativEffect On SpeedHunters

Our friend Abdulla at NegativEffect has just been featured in an amazing online site, SpeedHunters. Recenlty at the Bahrain International Circuit the guys went for a track guy and came across something they weren’t expecting. They saw the Toyota Ex-F1 Team testing Formula 1 Tires for Pirelli which was an amazing experience since they were telling them what they do, and explaining them the details of the car. Toyota pulled out of F1 but they are using their F1 team for consultancy services, and this one was contracted out to Pirelli. Abdulla took amazing pictures that you can find on his blog and turns out that he wasn’t the only one that thought his photographs were amazing, SpeedHunters posted about it as well and you can see the link below. I keep nagging him for more photographs because he does an amazing job.

Banyan Tree Terminates Bahrain Resort With Immediate Effect

BanyanTreesm

Now this came as a shocker, I wasn’t expecting the Banyan Tree Bahrain to be shutdown. From this letter it looks like that they really are serious about terminating the contract. I’m not sure what was breached in the contract or what violations led to this but I’m curious about it. This is very sad since we stayed in this hotel twice for GulfRun 4 and GulfRun 5, perfectly close to the track and very good service in that environment. Now looks like Banyan Tree is taking legal action against Al Areen for their breach of contract and actions, click the image above for the full letter that was sent out.

Thanks F for the email
