20 Day Hiatus

Trip0910

Its been a little while since I have been online or at my computer to make any posts. I took a very nice vacation in California for the last 21 days, and during that time I barely sat at a desk or had a laptop to work on any posts. I tried to have as much fun as possible and go out as much as I could, I tried seeing as many movies as I could as well. Just got back from a 16 hour and 35 minute flight from San Francisco to Dubai, not including the short trip from Dubai to Kuwait which feels like a short trip to the supermarket in comparison. I will be back to posting normally, I have a lot to post about, thank you for everyone that emailed and asked if I just disappeared off the face of the planet but I think I was having too much fun for my own good. Still it wasn’t enough, it has been the first long vacation I have taken in almost two years and it has been much needed. I literally purged my brain of all work and any other responsibility as soon as I walked through immigrations & customs at San Francisco when I landed in the beginning of September. I didn’t even read anything from GoogleReader, and I’m looking at it right now and its the most I have ever seen, I wish the GoogleReader went above the “1000+” mark so I can know that I am denting it since its probably around 5000 to 6000, and I will go through them when I have a chance. Having the iPad 3G with AT&T service in the US basically made the laptop useless, I almost never was on a computer during my stay since the iPad 3G provided for all my internet needs, searches, email, and any type of connectivity, I basically lived off the iPad and I would recommend anyone traveling to the US to get the 3G version with them since their is 3G coverage in most major cities and locations.

The Little Island

Just before Ramadan we decided to spend the last weekend completely at the shalaih, having fun and relaxing watching tv and swimming. I piled up all the shows I had as well as a few movies that I wanted to see, some good, some crappy, and some just plain funny. The last few weeks have been good since we haven’t had too many dust storms making the water better and better to go swimming and enjoying all forms of water sports.

We got all our energy out on Friday, I think I have more parts hurting me now then when I did when after the gym. We were on a SportsStuff Bandwagon which really beat the hell out of us, because we tried holding on as much as we can and when you fall off its a hell of a fall. So the next day we decided to go to the little Island called Al Halah just at the tip of Mina Al Zour. We took the bought with about four jet skis following us, they kept jumping on the wave made by the boat. When we got there the water was crystal clear and a few people were already there, it was amazingly relaxing. We stayed there for a good hour and a half before heading back, the water was a bit on the warm side but we would get a nice cool under current every once in a while. It was the perfect weekend, water by day, and couch by night.

The Comics on Marvel iPad Application

I have been reading comics again since the iPad came out and I can’t download them fast enough. Some series I go through them and love them, and some of them really suck. Surprisingly one my favorites right now is Black Panther & The Immortal Iron Fist but I finish those within two days at the most, UnCanny X-Men was pretty good as well. Civil War was fantastic but I hated the ending, not what I expected. Thor is really good as well, I’m just hoping they release more of his series. They release new comics every two to three weeks but sometimes it still just isn’t enough in my case. I’m looking forward to reading Captain America, and I haven’t even opened up the DC Comics Application yet.

  • The Black Panther**
  • The Immortal Iron Fist**
  • Annihilation**
  • Civil War**
  • House of M
  • Hulk**
  • The New Avengers*
  • Thor**
  • UnCanny X-Men
  • X-23: Target X*

A Day @ The Beach

The one thing I have to look forward to every week is getting to the weekend. Since its too hot to go riding or do anything else that involves outdoor activities, water sports is your best option. We have been going to the shalaih every weekend possible, even when its an insanely dusty we still go out and relax their, even bbqing with a little dust in the air.

The last weekend the water so pristine and clear it was amazing, I still think that Kuwait has one of the best water fronts in the world and I love it. The one thing that drives me nuts is people not taking care of the beaches and trash in the water, thats not even taking out the damage our waters have taken due to the government’s neglect and our crappy water treatment plants. That aside I just can’t believe how nice the water was, even when we were a good 700 meters into the ocean you can see clear down. And luckily this weekend the water didn’t feel so hot that you are swimming in soup, it felt normal for once with some cool undercurrents. Wakeboarding is still on the map for me but I haven’t had a chance, we are just enjoying swimming and relaxing as much as possible.

The best thing in the shalaih after swimming to chill, get something to eat, and watch show after show, nonstop until your either done with a season or move on to a movie. Now Ramadan is coming up in this heat, its going to be interesting to see who comes back to Kuwait, and if people still go to the beach, I remember last year we still went to the beach house and got in the water and went wakeboarding, but damn we got thirsty.

Fun Retro Cartoons

Duck Tales

The story of Scrooge McDuck, The Richest Duck in the World, with the biggest safe that you can dive into a pool of money. I remember obssessively watching this show as a kid, I loved it, I loved the theme song, it just made me feel good. He was a nut ball and his nephews were normal, so many great adventures, it was the good old days of Disney cartoons.

Gargoyles

This was something for the older kids, I remember from 94 and it ended around 97, a fantastic cartoon, deep and dark. I loved Goliath, the most honorable Gargoyle and most probably the strongest. I watched this show nonstop every time I got back from school, I just couldn’t get enough of it. Gargoyles was a great show and I got pulled into it whenever I was watching, never could get enough of it.

Talespin

Now this is one of the fun bunch, I loved Baloo, always getting into trouble and some how getting out it. The idea of going from Island to Island with Merchandise and work as if its the 1950s with Monkeys as bartenders was funny. Some of the characters were based on Jungle book and that is what got me watching it, I just remember that it was from the early 1990s, and you know you sing the theme song every time, “TALESPIN” lol.

Out of It for a Bit

The last few days have been a practical whirlwind, not enough time to read anything or write anything, just busy with family and work. GulfRun took a nice chunk of the weekend but that was a huge amount of fun and I have a ton of pics to post up. Then there is a lot coming up this coming week and more, not even a minute to scratch my head and a lot of travel thrown in-between. Now that time is a little sorted out I have some breathing room to finish a few task on hand, and catch up on my internet activities.

Dhana – 5Days/4Nights

Three weeks of planning, 30 Kilograms of meat, 7 kilograms of chicken, 8 boxes of water, 4 boxes of soda, 1 Landcruiser, 2 FJ Cruisers, and 7 guys. That is what it took to make an adventure of a lifetime. The perfect group of people to take a nomad trip to the most beautiful desert in Saudi, sleeping outside in the night sky is amazing, the sky is so clear you don’t need lights at night, the moon lights up the whole area its fantastic. You feel your chest clearing up from all the fresh air coming in, no telephone signal in the areas we were in. First night we came in and found our main camp site, and for each night we had a different camp site going in deeper and deeper into the desert. We had the Garmin 276c with the updated Saudi Desert maps, so we can coordinate our locations, walkie talkies are a must for these trips, and all the fighting takes place across the radio waves.

Took us about 5-6 hours to get to the first camp site, we started the fire to get some tea going, the smartest thing we did was have dinner before heading out to Saudi. You need a certain list of equipment for the cars, cooking, sleeping, precautions, and emergencies. I had an Iridium Satellite phone which was only to be used during emergencies, it looked like something out of 24 to call those bomber planes in the air. Then there was the air pump, jump start cables, battery charge unit, and tow cables. The tow cables I got were rated at 30’000 lbs with huge hooks at the end, they look menacing and we had to use it once because of an incident but I won’t mention that. Then there was a case that I was facing a flat tire in the rear tire, but we kept pumping up the tire and it would last the whole day so I decided not to change the tire, but when we got to Kuwait I found that the tire had two screws and one piece of would in it, those Yokomahas are tough tires, not the best but they did a fantastic job.

There were stretches of sand that we were flying over 100 kph per hour as if we are in a Dakar Rally, it was insane and my blood was pumping to an extreme point, it feels like you are floating on clouds when you are going over the soft sand. Then there was the amazing white and black camels all around, so many different kinds in all the dunes area, these camels didn’t care about us what so ever. These are some majestic dunes, they are at least 7 to 10 stories tall with dune up dune, with deep basin’s inside of them, even with pictures they don’t do reality justice, and the sand is so clean and orange, its amazing. There was even some dunes at about 20 stories high but I would have probably flipped the car backwards trying to climb it.

We had a three part day, morning for breakfast then we had out, then we find another location for afternoon break, then we head out in search for another location to find the best sleeping place. There was one point where we picked a location which was slightly slanted, and in the morning I woke up with one guy’s knee in my back and the other guy’s foot in my chest, luckily everyone was in a sleeping back. The most amazing thing was seeing the clear sky it was beautiful, you can see all the stars, you can see clearly until the horizon, it was a sight to wake up to in the morning as well. We got some rain the first night, it was a continuous light drizzle but the fire lit up and we slept perfectly fine, a little water didn’t hurt. The best part of the afternoon and evening stops was playing Risk, we played strategically making our alliances, and playing unexpectedly, I was more a Kamikaze during that game then trying to win, my goals were offense oriented, I tried killing off certain people with nothing else in mind. People were shouting, treaties were made, and troops were decimated, it was fantastic and the best time to play that board game.

The best part about it is how hungry we got, or pretty much how hungry I got and at night I would devour the food. Some of us would pass out right after, and I woke up few times at night, and I would feel some ice on top of my sleeping back but my morning it would all be gone. Some nights it got really cold but overall the weather was fantastic and I loved every moment. This was probably one of the funnest trips I had in a long time, I want to do it again, and I have a few ideas in mind for the next trip.

Out Of Commission!

SandDesert

Taking a nice break for a few days, about 5 days I think in total, the logistics aren’t completely worked out. We are heading out to a location in the Saudi Desert for some fun in the sand. Something different to do for New Years, I wanted to take a break, and this is the best possible break. No forms of communication in any direction, its a risk but really worth taking and I’m going to enjoy every moment of it. I think we will be traveling 800 to 1200 kilometers to get to our destination but it is a beautiful location that we went to in 2007 so I’m looking forward to it, and I get to test the new Landcruiser in the desert.

I hope everyone has a great new years!

Long Weekend

This is going to be a nice relaxing weekend with some good food and movies and tv shows, maybe a bbq as well. I’m thinking about trying to Wakeboard this weekend but that may end up to be a disaster but for ideal conditions I need flat water and my skills are abismal but I’m still gonna try. I really am looking forward to a relaxing weekend of chilling, tv shows, and some fun in the sun.

Movie List for the Weekend:

  • Fast & Furious
  • 12 Rounds
  • Doctor Who Planet of the Dead
  • Race to Witch Mountain
  • Pink Panther 2
  • Stomp Live
  • Star Trek The Captains Summit

To The Beach!

This has been an interesting weekend, after hanging out Thursday night for our usual get together we headed out straight to the shalaih at night. We all got there about the same time, 6 cars all together, already a few people there ahead of us. Most of us crash early, I spend a few hours watching anime which I almost manage to finish the whole series.

We get up next morning around 10 am, breakfast already in the kitchen, but I decided I wanted eggs and worked on that while watching Mel Gibsons’ Payback. We all decided to jump in the water, one jet ski was brought out and then a few others. Later on in the day the boat was brought out then another friend came with a boat. By noon we were more then 20 guys in the water, some flying around in the jetskis and some on the boats and some in the water. Then they started towing the Banana and all I can say is that I have a few bruises to prove that we flew off. I need to bring my life jacket with me, because it also absorbs some impacts which I could have been sparred. On another note, sun block is your friend because at this point I’m a little burnt and crispy especially after 7 hours in the sun. I’m all bruised up and feeling sore in all the wrong places but I never laughed that much in a while.
