Robo Gone From The Stable

I remember the first time I laid eyes on the BMW K1200R in BMW Motorrad on Park Lane in London. I fell in love with the beast, BMW came out with a machine that destoryed the competition that was based purely on the need to make a machine that was based purely on passion and engineering. I was remember ordering mine at the end of 2005 and getting it on Feb 2006, and I rode for so many months, into the heat, and I would smile every time I was on that bike. The BMW K1200R is machine that would make anyone smile the moment they twisted the throttle, amazing around corners and those brakes saved me many times.

Over the last two years I haven’t been riding Robo as much, I would always want to but I would end up riding on Diablo because I would want something light and nimble. I for one have a difficult time parting with my machines, I feel like they are linked to me since I have been through so much with them. A few people asked me if the bike was for sale a long time ago and I would be unsure about it, and I always think about the new owner and decide to keep him. But at this point I have too many bikes and not enough time in the world to ride as much as I want. I used to even go back home and switch bikes then go back out again to make sure I ride them. Now Robo has departed my stable and is with a new loving owner, honestly I wouldn’t sell Robo to anyone who doesn’t know what they are getting or is unaware of motorcycles, I wanted him to be appreciated for being such an amazing motorcycle and a new page for BMW road motorcycles, getting into the gritier side of riding. Well now I am down to three and enjoying them!

Cooling Down

Last year it didn’t get cool in Kuwait until the end of November, and now things are cooling off towards the end of October which is fantastic. I have been riding when ever I can for the past few days, and I’m certainly not getting enough and now your seeing all these riders when ever the sun is going down. As long as I am on the move I’m enjoying the cool breeze by the seaside but it gets a little warm when stopped at a light for too long. It’s been a while since I’ve ridden and I just love it when I’m on the bike.

I took my bikes to Tristar service and when they were brought back everything was perfect. I got on the BMW last week, started it up to get warmed up but when I got back there was a puddle under the bikes, turned out to be a gasoline puddle. I quickly switched off the bike and called Tristar, so the next morning they took the bike and turns out the fuel pump cracked due to the dry heat and use over the years. They replaced the unit under the “Good Will” Warranty which is fantastic since my bike has been out of warranty for two years now. As soon as I got it back I took it out for one hell of a rough ride, I tried riding calmly but I was kidding myself, I was like a kid with his new toy, flying all over the place when I could. Nothing beats riding.

Refreshing Ride

I get anxious these days to ride and enjoy going out with the few remaining days of cool weather. Saturday late afternoon just before sunset is the perfect time to ride other then waking up at the break of dawn. I enjoy riding at dawn the most because of the empty streets but these days I have been so busy I take what ever sleep I can get. I put my gear on, with the new playlist which is perfect on a decent ride so I can listen through it. I always have my songs on playlist repeat and shuffled songs so I don’t know what to expect, some songs get me energized so I got faster and ride harder and some songs make me want to stand on the pegs and dance. I used to do that in the US, dance to the songs, tap the tank and enjoy myself, but in Kuwait I don’t do too much of that so they won’t think I’m insane and so they won’t run me over.

The cool weather is a perfect 26C as I’m riding, and the best thing about the K1200R is that it doesn’t cook your legs when its warmed up. A fun ride around town and a ton of torque at my control. Song after song I was enjoying getting through traffic and enjoying the roads, at sunset there is some traffic but not too much. One thing that I noticed recently is that over the years a lot of people are more considerate to drivers, they move slightly to the side giving you the inside lane to get through knowing the bike is faster. It was a fun ride, after taking a fun route to my cousins house we chilled and watched BSG before heading home around 10:00 pm and I was riding fast to get home, your mind just gets into a precise zone when riding at night, it felt like I was flowing through, precision riding, judging cars, corners, distance, and speed, its a fantastic feeling when riding.

Friday – Breakfast Ride

Getting up early in the morning isn’t too hard when the weather is this nice and sunny outside, it was perfectly chilly. Showered and went down, got my leather jacket out and ready to go, warmed up the beemer for the ride, Robo was ready to go. I have been enjoying riding Robo a lot recently, I have missed this beast and he is one hell of a beast, a scary mechanical brute who can destroy all at will. All my bikes have personalities in my head and Robo in this case has the soul of Iron Hide from Transformers, ready to fight, shoot first and ask questions later.

We took an easy route by the sea side then heading to the free zone, and I was just enjoying the brute force of this machine. Monichum was enjoying the joyride we were taking, every corner was an adventure, from turn to turn, the best part is how empty the roads were, and then head to the free zone for a few shots. After we were done we met up with the guys at Prime & Toast, pretty much we were the first and got the seats together before the other lazy guys got up and came over.

3 Ride Out

In the morning @7:45 am in Mishref, we had a very long ride planned out and all the machines came out that day. Its been too long but Robo also came out after all this time, so the KTM and Ducati were out. Three of us wanted to do a lot of riding, we had one planned all the place and with three experienced riders we decided to take long fun routes.

Route:

  • Bayan Gas Station
  • Julai’a for a bite to eat
  • Back to the city
  • Taking the GulfRoad starting @ Miseela
  • GulfRoad to KPC
  • KPC to the 2nd Ring Road
  • 2nd Ring Road to the GulfRoad to Salmiya all the way down to Bida’a
  • Bida’a to the 6th Ring Road then to the Airport
  • Airport to Sabhan then to Mubarak Al Kabeer where we almost ran out of Gas
  • Filled up at Malik Fahad Gas Station in Al Qurain before heading home

We got in over 4 hours of riding, my odometer added over 350 Kilometers that day and I had a lot of fun, whenever we made a stop I would switch to another playlist to listern to. The feeling of those corners that we were enjoying were fantastic, I wanted to go knee down into some corners forgetting everything but the riding and the machine. What felt odd was that I was riding the KTM and Monichum was riding the Ducati and even when it was over 7 meters away from me I could clearly hear the exhaust tone of Pyro over the music and sound of the machine I was on, I need an exhaust for Tango. What an amazing day, the weather was fantastic, the roads were mostly empty, we saw other riders and as soon as I was done I felt that my day was fulfilled, I felt satisfied with this accomplishment, and it was still early in the day with so much to do, nothing beats a good day out riding.

Tristar Service Center

I was planning on riding Friday night, so I went downstairs to get on Pyro. Things looked good and the biked fired right up even after 1.5 months of remaining stationary. So I put it into gear and it jumped as if I wasn’t holding the clutch, it was strange. After a few tries and that didn’t work, so I parked Pyro and decided to go out on Robo.

Started that beast and all I got was a hiss, the battery was dead. What a start to riding, so I texted the Tristar Mechanic asking him if he could take a look at both bikes these week. Saturday morning at 8:15 am while I was asleep, I get a call from the Driver at Tristar saying he will be here in 15 minutes to pick up both bikes which surprised me. They took both bikes in the morning and I passed by their workshop. I was very surprised and very happy to see such a nice garage. I think my garage is pretty nice, but they have tiled floors, five areas to work on bikes, a nice waiting area, and all the machines organized. Its very nice seeing these beautiful machines treated like this. I went home around 12:30 pm and the bikes showed up around 2:45 pm which is fantastic. They replaced Robo’s battery and replaced a clutch piece, turns out the times I was cleaning the bike water was going into the housing because its open, I just have to make sure to cover it when I clean it up.

Clutch Issue

I called up Tristar around 5 pm to tell them about the problem I was having with Robo, something was most probably wrong with the clutch. I was loosing pressure at the clutch so I wasn’t sure what was going on, but something was not working right. I missed riding Robo so I was annoyed that everything wasn’t in perfect running condition.

They said they would pick up the bike next morning to take to the shop, and see what is going on. I thought that would be fine, I would have my bike back in a day or two. Around 5:45pm I get call from the Tristar driver who was at the door of my house here to pick up Robo. Instead of the morning he arrived in less then one hour to my house which is great. They took the bike and I was just hoping to have the machine fixed as soon as possible. Then the next day around 1 pm I get a call telling me they fixed my bike and it is on its way to be delivered to my home, I don’t think there is anything possible they could have done better. The part was replaced under warranty, it was fixed in less then 24 hours and I will be able to ride Robo as he was before.

At Dusk

I haven’t been out on Robo for some time now, and around 6:20 pm I felt like going for a ride. It was still a bit sunny and not too warm, with dust clearing up. I knew that their might be some kinks in the K1200R, any time I park it for some time I know the clutch is going to be a little bit off. I started the bike, let it warm up for about 10 minutes. Got my gear on and went out, I wanted to drive down wide open spaces and enjoy myself.

As I was riding the gear felt a little stiff, and I knew it wasn’t the gear box since they just changed the gear box completely. I was having the same issue where it would get really stiff after a long ride and that would make it really difficult to change gears. That really knocked my confidence down when I was going around the corners because I couldn’t have it the gear I wanted around the corner. It got a little better after riding, and I was enjoying myself since I was getting some cool breeze. After some time the gear box would be stiff again so I took Robo back home and parked. I did enjoy riding but not as much as I would have liked, it was a nice change of pace. I’m going to look for a small tripod that I can carry with me so that I can take some decent night pictures, I had some nicer shots but the blur is just driving me nuts.
