New Mac Book Pro

I’m not usually posting about hardware updates from Apple but this one seemed very interesting and enticing. These new Mac Book Pro with Retina Displays are supercharged machines in a smaller size then expected.

The one thing that is oddly changed is that power socket for the new MBP Retina Display models. That means if you have been collecting the power cables for your Mac Book Pros & Mac Book Air for all these years then you can’t use them for the new machines, going to have to collect a whole new bunch of them.

As usual the price is also up there, for a while I have been thinking of getting a new laptop, probably a Zen Book, but this update has thrown a wrench into that idea with a very lovely spec sheet below. Still its a bit on the pricey side, I think I want to see one in real life before making a decision.

Standard Model: 2.3Ghz quad-core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 & NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB [$2199]

Premium Model: 2.6GHz quad-core i7, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 & NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB [$2799]

Just to get an idea, this is the difference between the MBP 15 Inch & MBP Retina Display 15 Inch, and it packs a bigger punch then it’s predecessor.

Physical Comparison Between The Old & New MBPs

  • Height: 0.95 inch (2.41 cm) vs. 0.71 inch (1.8 cm)
  • Width: 14.35 inches (36.4 cm) vs. 14.13 inches (35.89 cm)
  • Depth: 9.82 inches (24.9 cm) vs. 9.73 inches (24.71 cm)
  • Weight: 5.6 pounds (2.56 kg) vs. 4.46 pounds (2.02 kg)

This is just a simple look into the Apple update on the Mac Book Pro. For a full breakdown check out all the articles over at Jacqui’s CouchAvenue she covers the Mac Book Pro, OSX Lion, iOS 6, and Other Minor Apple Updates. (She is the Apple Girl)

Amazon – Facelift

It seems that Amazon got a face light to their whole front end, and I like the update. It feels like and easy, makes me want to hit the buy it now button more then before. Now its clear the number of items in my checkout cart, this isn’t helping my credit card. Keeping my credit card at a zero balance is an uphill battle every month, and Amazon is no help.

Upgraded WordPress to 3.31 Thanks to Jacqui

Just as I was getting back to writing a few posts today since I found a minute to take a break I realized that something strange but didn’t think much about it. At around 7 pm when I was about to write a post everything on the backend of WordPress went berserk, the posts looked fine and the search and all the buttons were working but the backend was all jumbled up. There was a short moment of panic since I didn’t know what the hell was going on and I really didn’t like that feeling. For those who don’t know it says on the bottom my blog was put together by to awesome techies, Ananyah and Jacqui, and in this case I emailed Jacqui with the subject line “MAYDAY MAYDAY” and as usual she replied instantly! I sent her a screen shot of my messed up WordPress and basically said help, she replied that she will get to it in 30 mins which she did. After a little while she told me to check the backend and was totally different, she updated it to WordPress 3.31 with everything up to date and working smoothly, 3.31 is so cool and smooth. I have spent a few hours tinkering on the backend and I’m loving it, seriously Jacqui is a savior as usual and between the two of them they always come up with some cool stuff for me. Pearl Lounge Update

After years of use they finally decided to upgrade the place, I know they charge about 10 KD for entry if you don’t have a business class seat, I’m not sure what fees they get from the other airlines but I’m assuming its a lot of money at this point. You would think they would make improvements at least on a yearly basis but that isn’t the case. Luckily they do have free internet but honestly its so insanely slow it really kills, they should upgrade it since people are consistently using it. At least this time around the couches are relatively comfortable compared to the previous ones, those were falling apart and needed to be changed, but I think there are too many single couches around the whole place and only large couches on the side which are too few.

Playlist 10/10 – Update

I always enjoy when I update my playlist and manage to find a few more good songs to make it more entertaining in Random mode. The Alors On Danse song is insanely catchy and you can hear it in a lot of different places, I liked this remix version of it. The Nelly Furtado & Rihanna songs are just amazing, they just keep pumping out amazing songs, can’t wait for their next CDs, and I’m a huge fan of Deadmau5, I love everything that he has made.

  • Pink – Raise Your Glass
  • Nelly Furtado – Night Is Young
  • Stromae – Alors on Danse (Kanye West Remix)
  • Slim Thug & B.o.B – So High
  • Rihanna ft David Guetta – Who’s That Chick
  • Ciarra ft Usher – Turn It Up
  • Deadmau5 – Strobe (Club Edit)
  • Ke$ha – We R Who We R
  • Far East Movement – Like a G6

The original 10/10 playlist can be found here.

Apple’s Gear Update

From iPad to Mac Book Pro updates to the Mac Mini to the iPhone 4, Apple is just releasing product after product, from new product to updates, they are on a run. Usually they give some of their products some time to iterate, but somehow they all came together at the same time, new products and product updates. Now they have the last few updates for the year, I don’t know what they have planned next.

Last Update:

  • Mac Pros Now Have Up to 12 Cores
  • Apple’s LED Cinema Display Now Comes In 27″ Size, Dropping the 24″ & 30″ screens
  • Faster New iMacs Can Run Both SSD and HDDs at Once
  • Apple’s Magic Trackpad, No More Mouse

New XBox 360

It seems they have revamped the design completely and it is up for sale at this point. They have really revamped it with all the minor improvements in one, its not a new system its just a really good revamp. If you don’t have an XBox then this is worth getting since its a very good improvement, and its also about 20% smaller then before which is always a great improvement. The built-in hard drive is needed addition, and I like all they have done but I’m surprised they haven’t included a Blu-Ray in this upgrade, I’m really not sure what they are waiting for, and if its just a matter of cost.

Major Updates

  • Touch sensitive on/off and eject buttons (like the PS3)
  • “Much quieter”
  • 250GB internal hard drive, which is still swappable
  • A custom Kinect port (not a standard USB port—it’s a USB port that can feed more power)
  • There are five USB ports now, with three in the back and two in the front
  • AV cable included, an HDMI and optical audio
  • Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi
  • Different power supply—it’s still big but nearly weightless
  • External Xbox 360 hard drives and memory units are NOT compatible with the new Xbox
  • Internal components that are changed: two small fans changed into one large fan for quieter operation, 45nm integrated CPU and GPU
  • Price at $300

Nexus One Automated Update

I received a message on my Google Nexus One for update, I wasn’t sure what it was but I was too sleepy to think about it and just accepted it. I installed and restarted, right after I didn’t think much about it, I was reading an article on BBC then I was trying to move to things and the screen zoomed in when I realized they updated the multi-touch capability which is a very important feature to have but I was too lazy to root it or install a program for it. The update came from Google which fixes 3G issues as well as the multi-touch feature, a quick roll out for this service. Overall I am enjoying the Nexus One and all its capabilities, its interesting comparing it with the Blackberry which I will at a later point.

Blog Updates

I face a big problem with my blog over the past few weeks. It has been crashing every couple of days for a few hours a day. I wasn’t sure what was going on, and I have stopped hot linking of images from Google and Yahoo but still something was going wrong. I was in a state of panic with all that was going wrong at the same time, I expected the database to crash at this point as well, but I knew I was over reacting.

Suddenly when it crashed yesterday all my plugins were gone and I started getting a gigantic wave of spam comments. With the help of Michelle the blog has been updated from 2.5 to 2.71, and all my plugins have been reinstated. I’m thinking about a theme upgrade at a later point and making it mobile friendly (iPod Touch/iPhone/Android). Also at last the video embedding has been fixed, I think it was a problem that I was facing, this time around I tested it with IE, Mozilla, Opera, and Chrome. Even the flash problem with the picture uploader in WordPress seems to be working at this point, which is great. I have had problems with it for the past 5 months and at last its working. I still don’t know whats the cause of the recurring crashes, they told me its some script thats running on my blog, but I don’t know how exactly to figure that out but for now everything seems to be back to normal.
